The first Codnor Castle Historic Walk
Friday 5th August saw the first fundraising Codnor Castle walk run by the Codnor Castle Heritage Trust. Around 35 people from the local area and as far away as the USA gathered at 6pm at the Poet and Castle pub before making their way up to the Castle site. It was a glorious evening and the audience were given a historic tour of the site with exclusive access inside the fenced areas normally closed to the public. Re-enactors demonstrated medieval life, weaponry and armour and told tales of the some of the amazing battles that the Lord Greys of Codnor, previous owners of the Castle, had fought in including the Wars of the Roses (Bosworth), Crecy and Agincourt. The evening then finished with a heart-warming medieval pie and peas meal and free pint back at the Poet and Castle pub. The evening was a great success and about £350 was raised in order to help the Codnor Castle Heritage Trust to preserve the Castle for future generations. Thanks to all who made the night so enjoyable TIME TEAM DIG - JUNE 2007
Tony Robinson & Phil Harding - Day 3 The Time Team dig at Codnor Castle in June 2007 was a monumental success and we gained more information about the castle’s past than we ever dreamed of. One of the most memorable finds was the discovery of the castle draw bridge, until the dig nobody had any idea the castle had such a feature. Another very important discovery was the finding of foundations and remains of not one castle but three castles on the site. We now know that over a period of time the castle was dismantled and rebuilt as its defences were made stronger and modified to suit the threat at the time. Another great find uncovered was the Henry V Gold Noble coin. The gold coin dates from 1413 to 1422, around the time of the battle of Agincourt. We will soon have a full report on the Time Team dig on the Website, and the program is due to be shown on Channel 4 early in the New Year. Please take a look on the images page for photos from the dig. |
CODNOR CASTLE TIME TEAM RECONSTRUCTIONS
We now have all the reconstructions from the 2007 Time Team dig. All the reconstuctions are courtesy of Raysan Al-Kubaisi, Time Team graphics. Please take a look at the images page to view the reconstructions.

The consolidation work to Codnor Castle is now well underway and UK Coal the land owners are putting around £750.000 into the consolidation project. This is great news and Croft Conservation who is carrying out the repair work are doing a fantastic job. Our thanks go out to UK Coal as without there help and commitment to Codnor Castle the Time Team dig and the consolidation work would not have been possible. Please look at the images page for more photos of the consolidation work in progress. King Henry V Gold Noble coin found on day 3.
